The Bike Shop and Hire Story

The Bike Shop and Hire has been around since the 1980s – it even predates the Port Douglas Primary School! Over time, it has become an integral part of the Port Douglas landscape attracting both locals and travellers to experience the unique biking experiences that the local area has to offer.

Fast forward to 2016 and Rod and Angie Johnson had just relocated from Sydney to Port Douglas and were looking for a new business that tied in with their lifestyle and passions. Rod had been mountain biking his whole life and had raced competitively for many years. The Bike Shop and Hire was not for sale at the time, but a series of events led to the purchase of the business and the real work started.

Rod and Angie had a vision and since 2016 they have worked hard to build a team and grow the business to what it is today. Every team member they hire has a passion for bikes, whether it be maintaining and fixing them, selling them, hiring them, or riding them!

Meet the Bike Shop and Hire Team

Director

Rod Johnson

Having owned and operated businesses across multiple industries for over 30 years, it had long been a long term goal of Rod’s to combine his business expertise with his passion for cycling and outdoor adventure. With the Bike Shop and Hire, he gets to do just that while helping others to enjoy the benefits of this lifestyle.

Rod is no stranger to adventure sports having participated in many sports including paragliding, expedition kayaking and mountain biking.

He is also involved with the Rainforest and Reef Cycling Club and has served on the committee for years working to grow the sports of mountain biking and road cycling in the area.

Boss Lady

Angie Johnson

Angie worked alongside Rod in many of the family-owned and operated businesses.

Taking on the Bike Shop and Hire in 2016 allowed her to combine her love of meeting new people and helping them enjoy mountain biking and road cycling just like she does.

Angie may be a grandmother of five but her energy and passion for outdoor adventures and getting others involved in them makes that hard to believe.

Loving life in Port Douglas, Angie is an active advocate for the Rainforest and Reef Cycling Club and until recently, the Douglas Hockey Club where she played an integral role in establishing Beach Hockey in Australia. She is also currently serving on the committee of the World Beach Hockey Association.

Cool Tech Guy

Aedan Busmer

Aedan is a fully qualified bike mechanic with 10 years of experience in this industry. Having been in the business for 8 years, he oversees all technical roles within the operation ensuring a high-quality result with his team of 4 mechanics and other team members. He is also an accomplished downhill racer, recently placing 5^th in the 2023 Crankworks Downhill Championships held in Cairns. His spare time is spent on family camping, fishing trips or racing BMX with his two sons.

Manager

Andrea Zanelli

After years of enjoying the trails on his MTB and managing numerous restaurants in the local area, Andrea joined the Bike Shop team in 2021 to manage the hire and retail operations of the business. His years spent in hospitality have enabled Andrea to deliver a truly unique customer experience to holidaymakers and locals alike in all their interactions with The Bike Shop. Recently becoming a father means his spare time is limited, so he shares precious hours with his MTB and savours his latest red wine discovery with his wife.

Community

We strive to create an inclusive community for our team and our customers. We welcome riders of all ages and abilities and actively encourage both locals and visitors to get out on a bike to explore what the Port Douglas community has to offer. We even organise community rides every week.

Creating Memories

Most of us have fond childhood memories on a bike. We love helping our customers to create more memories they can treasure for a lifetime. Whether that be through hiring or selling them a bike, setting them up with a self-guided tour or taking them on a longer bike tour – there are always new memories to create when you get out on a bike.

The freedom to explore, choose, be autonomous, be flexible and creative. This is something we foster within our team and create for our customers. We can help tailor tours to suit your individual needs or give you the local knowledge required so you can enjoy it on your own schedule.

Dependability

You want a bike and a team you can depend on. Our bikes are all serviced in-house at our own workshop by our highly-skilled bike mechanics. If you are ever out on a ride and find yourself in a tricky spot, a quick call to our team and they will save the day. We are a team you can depend on.
